The Child Center Collaborative Problem Solving - Parent Groups

The Child Center provides Collaborative Problem Solving, which has been designated as an evidence-based practice.

The Child Center is proud to offer training in Collaborative Problem-Solving for parents, caregivers, and professionals! The Child Center is enthusiastically integrating Collaborative Problem Solving theory into our array of strategies to build family relationships, parental efficacy, and the coping skills of children. We are excited and committed to offer our community an interactive opportunity to learn more about Collaborative Problem Solving, bring it into homes in a practical fashion, and successfully apply the Collaborative Problem Solving skills with Lane County’s at risk children.

Through parent and family education our CPS groups provide learning and support for parents and foster parents to decrease negative or undesirable behaviors, develop positive communication between parent and child, and help parents teach needed life skills to their children or foster children in the areas of problem solving, emotional regulation and frustration tolerance. These skills allow children to better handle the demands and stresses placed on them by school, siblings, peers and parents.

Our parent groups are divided into four group training levels:

Level 1 is called “The Explosive Child Study and Action Group.” This is a five week session beginning parent study and action group teaching the basic concepts of CPS and builds on the skills necessary to implement CPS at home. We provide an interactive and personalized learning setting with a focus on the acquisition of CPS principals and skills.

The first week participants receive a copy of The Explosive Child” by Ross W. Greene, PhD.and asked to fill out a brief questionnaire. Each weekly session covers chapters in the book, including question and answer time, giving participants a chance to fine tune their new skills.

Level 2 is called “Family-Specific Collaborative Problem Solving.” This is a more advanced study and action group which builds on and hones the skills learned in Level One. We provide a highly interactive and personalized group setting with a focus on the practical application of CPS principals in every day family life with parents and their children. This five week session begins with a copy of Lost at School” by Ross W. Greene. Weekly sessions cover chapters in the book, include question and answer time, and give participants a chance to practice skills.

We are starting a Level 2.5 in 2011! “Plan B Tuesdays” will be scheduled through out the year for parents wanting to further hone their skills and fine tune their Plan B skills.

Level 3 is a “Volunteer Co-Facilitator” who is chosen through application to become co-facilitators of the next round of Level One groups. They assist in running activities in the Level One groups and provide extra assistance as needed to group members.
